New releases - Ikepod Seapod

The new diver watch by Ikepod features a 46 mm 316L steel case waterproof to 200 meters, a unidirectional rotating bezel, a screw-down crown, a Miyota self-winding movement and a silicone strap with ardillon. The design by Fabrice Gonet is a tribute to the dial of the Seaslug, the very first Ikepod watch dating back to 1996, and to the round shape of subsequent models. The watch will be available on 20 September in three versions: Zale (orange hour markers, see picture), Jacques (blue hour markers), and François (black PVD case).

The Revue Internationale de l’Horlogerie (RIH) was a trade magazine published monthly in La Chaux-de-Fonds (Switzerland). Its April 1952 issue was fully devoted to the self-winding wristwatch, a product that over twenty years after its debut still struggled to gain widespread acceptance among the public. As the Bales Watch Fair was approaching, the obvious intent of the RIH was to promote the sales of a timepiece that customers still found unreliable and too expensive.

The brief history of the self-winding watch is the work of Alfred Chapuis, the most reputed historian of watchmaking at the time. Abraham-Louis Perrelet is mentioned as the inventor of the “Perpetuel” timepiece in the 1770s. A few years later, such great watchmakers as Abraham-Louis Breguet and Louis Recordon patented their own ingenious systems. The British John Harwood was the first to create an automatic wristwatch in the late 1920s. In the mid-1930s, the Perpetual by Rolex paved the way to the modern automatic watch.

The next pages feature a wide selection of contemporary self-winding movements presented by their manufacturers. Photo above: calibers by ETA and AS.

Most exhibitors at the upcoming Basel Watch Show were presenting automatic watches. These pages feature products by Rolex, Movado, Omega and Breitling among others.

The final pages are devoted to the impact of the self-winding watch on world markets. Retailers from all over the globe were invited to write about their experiences. Photo above: reports from Brazil and Canada.

ITALIANO
La sezione finale è dedicata all’impatto dell’orologio automatico sui mercati mondiali.

In 1947, Longines celebrated its 80th anniversary by publishing a 200-page book that featured dozens of pen-and-ink drawings, black and white photos, as well as color plates. Contained in a cardboard case and an additional cardboard cover, Histoire de la Fabrique des Longines (History of Longines) was printed by the Imprimerie Centrale from Lausanne in a luxury edition of 80 examples and a standard edition of 2,180 copies.

The text details the events of a saga that started in 1847, when Auguste Agassiz became the sole owner of a workshop he had opened a few years before in Saint-Imier, along with two associates. Ernest Francillon, his nephew, took over the business in 1862 and built a factory in the locality called Les Longines.

Though rather hard, the 1870s saw the opening of the American agency in New York and the creation of the watchmaker’s Trade Mark – an hour glass with wings.

Longines started the following century in a much better shape and as a private company. The annual production rose to 122,000 pieces and the number of workmen reached 800. The photo above shows a crowded workshop. Longines had to extend its factory.

After the fame and success brought about by pilots such as Charles Lindbergh, who timed their record-breaking flights with Longines watches, the World crisis of the early 1930s affected the company greatly. It survived somehow and resumed its rise in the second part of the decade. The wrist chronograph (see above) was one of its flagship products.
The breakout of World War 2 led to the general mobilization of the Swiss Army, which weakened the company’s workforce. Commercial difficulties multiplied, but Longines managed to distribute millions of watches each year and duly celebrated its 75th anniversary in 1942. In 1947, as the book came out, the company was enjoying the post-war boom.

ITALIANO

ENGLISH

This 32-page brochure was created by the Swiss Chamber of Watchmaking - the employers’ association that also published the quarterly magazine “La Suisse Horlogère”.

The author is Pierre Huguenin, who starts by telling a brief history of watchmaking since the Middle Ages.
The following sections deal with materials, style, waterproofness, movements, accuracy, and servicing.

All in all, a fine and richly illustrated example of popularization aimed at both the sales people and the general public. Its only defect being a common practice of the contemporary trade press: the brand names of the watchmakers were erased from the dials of the featured timepieces, presumably to avoid free advertising. No harm done: the modern-day collector will be more than happy to guess the missing names …

ITALIANO

Only Watch 2021

Christie’s Geneva will host the ninth edition of Only Watch, the biennial charity auction whose aim is to raise funds for research into Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Since its first edition in 2005, Only Watch has raised more than 70 million Euros to support the Association Monégasque contre les Myopathies.
The 2019 edition of the event made history as the unique Grandmaster Chime offered by Patek Philippe sold for $31 Million, thus becoming the most expensive timepiece of all time. 54 brands will offer one-off luxury watches – among them, Audemars Piguet, Blancpain, Breguet, Girard-Perregaux, Hublot, Montblanc, Patek Philippe, TAG Heuer, Tudor, Ulysse Nardin, Zenith. Scroll down to take a look at three of them and click here for the full list.
In the weeks preceding the auction, the watches will be presented to the public, media, and horological enthusiasts, during a promotional tour that will start on 22 September in Monaco and end in Geneva after making stops in Dubai, Tokyo Singapore and Hong Kong. The auction will take place on 6 November, at 2pm (Geneva time), at the Four Seasons Hôtel des Bergues.

The Tribute to Fifty Fathoms No Rad revisits a Blancpain diving instrument from the mid-60s. The model created for Only Watch features a chapter ring, hands and a bezel time scale featuring orange-coloured Super-LumiNova®, this shade referring to the colour representing the 2021 edition of Only Watch. The dominant element on the dial is the "no radiations" logo, whose original yellow and red colours have been replaced by orange and yellow.

The Breguet Type XX Only Watch 2021 flyback chronograph reproduces the codes of the first generation of civilian Type XX timepieces. The bronze color of its dial is a nod to the original models with dials colored in this way. This unique 38.30 mm piece comes equipped with a Valjoux 235 movement, directly derived from the Valjoux 222 used by Breguet in the 1950s and early 1960s.

This unique Tudor Black Bay GMT features a case and bracelet finish that is the result of a stainless-steel ageing technique. The bridges and mainplate of the MT5652 Manufacture Calibre were coated in black before being aged by barrel tumbling. The Black Bay GMT One is a Master Chronometer. Achieving this certification required a substantial number of changes to the movement and highlights the brand's technical expertise and know-how.

Pubblicità d'epoca - Ebauches SA (1946)

“Chiamateci e i pezzi arriveranno!”

Imitations and counterfeits were major concerns for Rolex since the early 1930s, when its founder Hans Wilsdorf filed a complaint against a casemaker that infringed the Oyster patent. Rolex won that case and subsequently went to court whenever necessary in order to protect its intellectual property. Here are two examples of how the company informed the public and the players of the industry about its legal actions, and an ad ironically mentioning the multitude of "close relatives" the Submariner met up with over the years.

This “mise en garde” (warning) dating back to 1948 notifies the readers of a Swiss trade magazine about the Federal tribunal’s ruling against the “Rex” brand and logo, that were recognized as imitations. The text also reminded that Rolex would not hesitate to take to court whoever engaged in similar activities.

In 1962, Rolex and Gay Frères issued this warning against manufacturers that produced imitations of the bracelets featured in the accompanying image – from top to bottom: the Jubilee, President and Oyster. The text pointed out that these were original designs by Gay Frères exclusively supplied to Rolex.

“All of a sudden, every watch wants to resemble this one”. This 1967 ad deals with the Submariner and the growing number of more or less identical copies manufactured by unscrupulous competitors. After quoting Oscar Wilde - "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" - Rolex listed the unique features of the real deal.
Are you a Rolex fan? Then you cannot miss reading my two books about the world’s most popular watchmaker: Rolex dalla A alla Z (Italian only, click here to learn more) and Rolex 1905-1960 (English and Italian, click here to learn more).

ITALIANO

This timepiece features four successive levels of dials, formed by a bezel, a flange, and two levels of dials with different treatments: one in NAC platinum alloy, the other in titanium or gold, depending on the model. Each surface has its own specific finish – polished, satin, angled, sunburst, or frosted. Mauron Musy has opened up the dial just enough to reveal the vital components of the caliber: the escapement, barrel, and hour and minute pinion. The MU05 Skeleton Armure comes in a limited edition of 13 timepieces.
