The passing of a hero - Morte di un eroe

Fred Milward sadly passed away. A Private of "A" Company, he was one of the paratroopers who took part in the assault on the Merville Gun Battery by the 9th Parachute Battalion on D-Day, and subsequently held the strategically vital position of Bois-des-Monts against the enemy's fierce attacks. His photo is taken by Neil Barber's book The Day The Devils Dropped In, and so is the following quote: "Never let it be said we were not scared. I was, and like many more of us, when we carried our boys down to bury them near the Bois-des-Monts, I wondered where my grave would be. But I was spared, and now every year, with others who made it, I go back to Normandy and honour our dead".

Fred Milward non è più tra noi. Soldato semplice della Compagnia "A", fu uno dei Paracadutisti che parteciparono all'assalto sferrato dal 9. Battaglione alla Batteria di Merville il 6 giugno 1944, e in seguito difesero una posizione di vitale importanza strategica presso il Bois-des-Monts, contro i massicci attacchi del nemico. La sua foto è tratta dal libro The Day The Devils Dropped In di Neil Barber, come pure la seguente citazione: "Non si dica che non avevamo paura. Io l'avevo e, come tanti altri, quando trasportavamo i corpi dei nostri compagni per la sepoltura al Bois-de-Monts, mi chiedevo dove avrebbero sistemato la mia tomba. Ma mi sono salvato e ora, con gli altri che ce l'hanno fatta, torno in Normandia tutti gli anni per rendere omaggio ai nostri caduti".
