Art & Time - La Via del Sangue (Jannis Kounellis, 1973)

This post launches a new section of 10e10.ch, devoted to Art in Time and Time in Art. Thanks to exclusive access to the archives of Galleria La Salita, a prominent art gallery in Rome from 1957 to 1998, I will be able to feature works by a few modern and contemporary artists that deal with the favorite subject of this website – time. As it can be expected, they do so in an original, unusual, sometimes puzzling way - the kind of timepieces you never get tired of looking at, even though they do not actually tell the time.

 

The artist’s book titled “La Via del Sangue” is a perfect example of this. Its author is the Greek Italian Jannis Kounellis (1936-2017), the world-famous exponent of Arte Povera, who created it in conjunction with an exhibition titled “Apollo” and held by Galleria La Salita in 1973.

“La Via del Sangue” was published by La Salita and printed by Nazareno Iori from Rome in 290 numbered examples: 250 were offered to the public, 30 were not for sale and 10 were individually signed artist’s proofs.

Each booklet was contained in a publisher’s printed slipcase. Its format is 15 x 11 cm (5.9 x 4.3 in.) and the example seen here is number 24/30.
The latest example of "La Via del Sangue" to surface at auction was part of the 1-250 series. It was sold at Finarte / Minerva Auctions on 14 December 2016 for € 3,000.

Why choose “La Via del Sangue” to start the Art & Time section? Because it is a weekly planner, albeit of a very peculiar sort, and as such it relates to time. During the aforementioned exhibition, Kounellis went to the gallery daily, struck a match and mounted it onto paper. 

The result is a booklet featuring seven burnt wood matches, each mounted onto a singed page annotated by the artist himself with a day of the week. The simple act of striking a match to mark each day of the week suggests a ritualized cultural or religious expression, even one of penitence. In this instance, Kounellis is indirectly invoking Apollo, known as the god of light and the sun, to whom the exhibition was dedicated.

Associated with Arte Povera since the 1960s, Jannis Kounellis investigated the alienation inherent in contemporary society, juxtaposing the materials of mass urban and industrial civilization with symbols and values of the pre-industrial world. Incorporating humble non-art materials such as cotton, wool, coal, grain sacks, glass bottles, meat hooks, fire, soot, smoke, bed-frames, doors, shelves, and clothing, Kounellis' work is a melodramatic mixture of installation, environment, performance, and theatrical show.

Questo post inaugura una nuova sezione di 10e10.ch, dedicata all’Arte nel Tempo e al Tempo nell’Arte. L’accesso esclusivo all’archivio de La Salita, galleria romana di primo piano tra il 1957 e il 1998, mi permetterà di presentare le opere di alcuni artisti moderni e contemporanei che trattano il tema preferito di questo sito: il Tempo. Come si può immaginare, esse lo fanno in modo originale, insolito, a volte sconcertante. Si tratta di “segnatempo” che non ci si stanca mai di guardare, anche se in realtà non dicono che ora è.

Il libro d’artista intitolato “La Via del Sangue” ne fornisce un esempio perfetto. L’autore è il greco-italiano Jannis Kounellis, celebre esponente dell’Arte Povera, che lo creò in occasione della mostra dal titolo “Apollo”, organizzata da La Salita nel 1973. “La Via del Sangue” fu pubblicato da La salita e stampato dalla tipografia Nazareno Iori di Roma in 290 esemplari numerati: 250 in commercio, 30 fuori commercio e 10 prove d’artista firmate. Il libriccino si trovava all’interno di in una custodia di cartoncino sulla quale erano stampati il titolo e il nome dell’autore. Il formato è 15 x 11 cm. L’esemplare presentato in queste foto è il numero 24/30.

L'esemplare de "La Via del Sangue" apparso più recentemente sul mercato faceva parte della serie numerata da 1 a 250. È stato aggiudicato da Finarte / Minerva Auctions il 16 dicembre 2016 per 3.000 Euro.

Perché scegliere “La Via del Sangue” per aprire la sezione Art & Time? Perché si tratta di un agenda settimanale, sia pure di tipo molto particolare, e quindi è in rapporto con il tempo. Durante la mostra citata, Kounellis si recò tutti i giorni presso la Galleria, accese un fiammifero e lo attaccò sulla carta. Il risultato fu un libriccino con sette fiammiferi, ciascuno montato su una pagina bruciacchiata e annotata dall’artista con un giorno della settimana. Il semplice atto di accendere un fiammifero per contrassegnare ogni giorno della settimana suggerisce un’espressione culturale o religiosa ritualizzata, perfino di penitenza. In questo caso, Kounellis sembra invocare indirettamente Apollo, dio della luce e del sole, al quale è dedicata la mostra.

Esponente dell’Arte Povera dagli Anni 60, Jannis Kounellis ha indagato l’alienazione connessa alla società contemporanea, sovrapponendo i materiali della civiltà urbana e industriale di massa ai simboli e ai valori del mondo preindustriale. Caratterizzata dall’uso di materiali umili e non-artistici quali cotone, lana, carbone, sacchi di iuta, bottiglie di vetro, ganci da macellaio, fuoco, fuliggine, fumo, telai da letto, porte, scaffali e abiti, l’opera di Kounellis è una commistione melodrammatica di installazione, ambiente, performance e spettacolo teatrale.

Chronomètre FB 1L – The in-house tourbillon movement is combined with a new display of the age and phases of the moon. Available in two ten-piece limited editions, the new collection displays the moon phases by means of a large hand at 6 o’clock – a patent-pending complication.

FREDERIQUE CONSTANT

Slimline 50-hours Power Reserve – The 40mm case hosts the 28^th in-house movement of the brand’s collection. The new FC-723 automatic caliber adds the power reserve module to the FC-703 base. The indicator is displayed at 10 o’clock with a red sector indicating that it is time to put the watch on or wind it.

IKEPOD

Duopod – Twenty-five years after its creation, Ikepod is back with the same cases and crown but with the dials revisited by watch designer Emmanuel Gueit. “Duo” hints to the two hands of a 42mm quartz timepiece that is technically simplified in the interests of practicality and affordability.

SWISS MILITARY

SM34079 Chronograph – The 42.5mm case in stainless steel with PVD plating hosts a Ronda quartz movement and is waterproof up to 100 meters. The glass is in extra hardened K1 mineral crystal with sapphire coating. A vintage style leather strap is available instead of the stainless steel bracelet.

Published by a French magazine, this ad features the newly introduced Ref. 130 chronograph, which stayed in production until 1960 and went on to become one of the most iconic and sought after Patek Philippe vintage timepieces. The one seen here features a fine and rare two tone dial.

L’esemplare illustrato ha un bellissimo e raro quadrante a due toni.

Memories from Dachau

Part of the interest of old watches frequently lies in the memories they bring with them. In this case, everything is about memory. The two timepieces featured in this post are on display at the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site. Opened in 1933, only a few months after Adolf Hitler took power, Dachau was the first Nazi Germany’s concentration camp. At first it housed political prisoners and later on evolved into a death camp where tens of thousands of Jews, physically and mentally handicapped, homosexuals died from malnutrition, disease and overwork, or were executed.
I took these pictures in the “shunt room”, the place were new inmates were ordered to strip down and hand over their clothing and personal effects. Some of these objects were retrieved and are now on display.

The wristwatch belonged to Albert Frohn, a German driver and mechanic who was arrested for unknown reasons in 1944 and sent to Dachau. He survived the ordeal and was liberated as the American troops entered the camp on April 29, 1945.

The pocket watch belonged to Nikolai Owsjanikov, a Soviet railroad worker who was deported to Germany to perform slave labor. He spent a month in Dachau before being transferred to a nearby subcamp, where preparatory excavation works of a railway tunnel were underway. His fate is unknown.

I must confess that I know nothing about these two watches’ manufacturers and technical features. In fact, these were the last things on my mind while I stood in front of the glass showcase.

Una parte del fascino degli orologi d’epoca risiede spesso nel ricordi che essi portano con sé. In questo caso, la memoria è tutto. I due segnatempo illustrati in questo post sono esposti presso il Sito della Memoria nel Campo di Concentramento di Dachau. Inaugurato nel 1933, a pochi mesi dall’ascesa di Adolf Hitler al potere, Dachau fu il primo Campo di Concentramento della Germania nazista. In un primo tempo ospitava solo prigionieri politici; poi diventò un campo di sterminio nel quale decine di migliaia di ebrei, disabili fisici e mentali, omosessuali morirono di fame, malattie e sfinimento o furono giustiziati.
Ho scattato queste foto nel “locale di smistamento”, dove i nuovi arrivati erano costretti a spogliarsi e consegnare gli abiti insieme con gli effetti personali. Alcuni di questi oggetti sono stati recuperati e ora fanno parte della mostra.
L’orologio da polso apparteneva ad Albert Frohn, un autista e meccanico tedesco arrestato per ragioni sconosciute nel 1944 e inviato a Dachau. Riuscì a sopravvivere e ritrovò la libertà quando le truppe americane entrarono nel campo il 29 aprile del 1945. L’orologio da tasca era di Nikolai Owsjanikov, un operaio sovietico delle ferrovie deportato in Germania per lavorare. Trascorse un mese a Dachau prima di essere trasferito in un campo vicino, dove erano in corso gli scavi di un tunnel ferroviario. Il suo destino è sconosciuto.
Devo confessare che non so nulla dei fabbricanti e della caratteristiche tecniche dei due orologi. A dire la verità, era a tutt’altro che pensavo mentre mi trovavo davanti alla vetrina.

Vintage ambassadors - Bartali & Coppi (1950)

"Breitling won a smile from the two Campionissimi Bartali and Coppi". As the official timekeeper of major cycling races in the early 1950s, Breitling was well placed to sign partnership deals with the top riders of the time – the Italian Gino Bartali and Fausto Coppi. “Use Breitling to time events!” recommended the message signed by Bartali. Coppi wrote, “The Breitling chronograph is truly perfect”. In 1950, the company manufactured a few timepieces featuring the Giro d’Italia or Tour de France wordings on the dial.

“Breitling ha conquistato il sorriso dei due Campionissimi Bartali e Coppi”. In quanto cronometrista ufficiale di grandi gare ciclistiche nei primi Anni 50, Breitling si trovava in posizione avvantaggiata per concludere accordi di collaborazione con i numeri 1 dell’epoca, gli italiani Gino Bartali e Fausto Coppi. “Cronometrate Breitling!”, raccomanda il messaggio firmato da Bartali. Gli fa eco Coppi: “Il cronografo Breitling è veramente perfetto”. Nel 1950, la Casa produsse una serie di orologi con la scritta Giro d’Italia o Tour de France sul quadrante.

La statua e l'orologio

Tra i passeggeri in attesa del tram presso una fermata del centro di Ginevra c’è questo signore elegante e silenzioso, che tollera con pazienza gli eventuali ritardi e l’oltraggio dei vandali che gli imbrattano il bavero della giacca. Ha nervi d’acciaio, anzi di bronzo come tutto il resto: il cappello, gli occhiali, la giacca, la cravatta, i pantaloni, le scarpe…

... e l'orologio. Pensavo si trattasse di qualcosa di generico, mentre mi avvicinavo per guardare meglio. Invece avevo sottovalutato lo scultore e la sua attenzione per il dettaglio. L'orologio è il riconoscibilissimo Royal Oak di Audemars Piguet. Inaudito: una creatura della Vallée de Joux celebrata a casa di Patek Philippe, Rolex e Vacheron Constantin!

Scherzi a parte, la statua - una delle tre esposte presso la fermata di Plainpalais, tutte create da Gérald Ducimitière e inaugurate nel 1982 - si ispira a un personaggio reale quanto l'orologio che - evidentemente - amava indossare: André L'Huillier, importante collezionista ginevrino e mecenate d'artisti, scomparso nel 1998.

Baselworld 2019 (4)

This is the fourth of a series of posts featuring the new models on display at the world’s biggest watch show.

ALPINA

Alpiner X – The new AlpinerX smart outdoors watch uses advanced measurement functions benefiting from environmental sensors such as the new heart rate monitoring, UV, temperature, altitude, pressure, north direction. The case is made from glass fiber with a steel case-back.

EDOX

Sharkman III – Water resistant up to 1000m / 100 ATM, protected by a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and a ceramic bezel, this divers watch features a double o-ring patented gasket for the crown and pushers. To offer readability, the hands and indexes are covered with Superluminova X1.

FIYTA

Flying Apsaras – This timepiece by the Chinese brand belongs to the newly launched Talent Collection Dunhuang Themed Enamel Watch. It features a 18kt pink gold case with see-through back, a hand-wound Swiss movement and a silver dial with hand-made filigree enamel whose production requires two months and 53 procedures.

ORIS

Big Crown ProPilot Timer GMT – The watch offers a GMT function via the red-tipped central hand, a bi-directional rotating bezel for timing events, and a fabric strap option made of Ventile, a Swiss Made weather-resistant woven cotton fabric. The Oris’ seat-belt-inspired clasp no longer needs to be folded to be secured.

URWERK

UR-105 CT Maverick – The latest version of the model features a bronze and titanium case, as well as the signature wandering hour complication in which the hours on satellites progress in turn along a track of minutes. Each satellite holds three hour numerals and is mounted on an openworked rotating carousel.

Vintage Timepieces - Bulova

Baselworld 2019 featured an interesting exhibition of vintage Bulova watches. The Accutron and its many declinations obviously took the lion’s share.

Vintage Ad - Cyma (1938)

"Perfect timing under all climates and conditions" – This 1938 ad about the Cyma waterproof watches includes a mention of the shock absorber “fitted to the gents watersport watches”, which “is specially constructed to hold a large quantity of oil and to prevent the same flowing away from the pivot”. “Watertightness is permanently secured” by the design of cases in which “no perishable materials are used” – waterproof timepieces often featured cork or leather gaskets. Cyma was a trademark registered by Tavannes, a prominent company whose production plant employed 2,000 people at the time.

In questo annuncio del 1938 sugli orologi impermeabili Cyma si cita anche il dispositivo antiurti “adottato nei modelli da uomo per gli sport acquatici, (…) progettato appositamente per trattenere una grande quantità di lubrificante e impedirne lo spargimento dal perno”. “La tenuta stagna è assicurata in permanenza” dalla costruzione di casse nelle quali “non si usano materiali deperibili”: spesso gli orologi impermeabili avevano guarnizioni di sughero o cuoio. Cyma era un marchio registrato da Tavannes, fabbricante di primo piano che in quegli anni dava lavoro a 2.000 dipendenti.

This is the fifth of a series of posts featuring a few pieces seen in Geneva at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie, the year’s first watch show.

PIAGET

Excalibur Huracan – Visible through the titanium sapphire crystal case back, the skeleton automatic RD630 caliber offers a 12° angled balance wheel representing the movement signature associated with Lamborghini Squadra Corse.

Fraise – The Fruit line features color-gradient cases made of Carbon TPT®  combined with Quartz TPT® of a different hue for each model.

ULYSSE NARDIN

Skeleton X – The openworked movement is part of a geometry featuring an X formed by four of the indexes, framed in a rectangle, in turn inside a circle.

VACHERON CONSTANTIN

Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin – The 41.5mm pink gold case is just 8.1mm thick and hosts the self-winding in-house 1120QP caliber.

Twin Beat Perpetual Calendar - A patent-pending system enables instantaneous switching between Active mode and Standby mode. The latter steps in during long periods of stasis when the watch is laid flat and a high-frequency balance would drain the mainspring with no added advantage.
