The AP Royal Oak - A king of the auction market

Antiquorum celebrated 50 years of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak by recalling its long time history with the iconic watch designed by Gérald Genta and introduced in 1972. The Geneva auctioneer recorded nearly 1,000 Royal Oaks presented for sale since 1992, of which nearly eight out of ten were sold. This thirty year archive provides an interesting reference on the evolution of the model’s value. Here are a few examples (pictures courtesy of Antiquorum Genéve).

This Royal Oak Jumbo “A Series” (number 88) in stainless steel was produced in 1972. Equipped with its Gay Freres bracelet dated 1.72, it sold for CHF 40,000 in 2012.

Nine years later (July 2021), this stainless steel Royal Oak Jumbo dating back to 1976 sold for CHF 286,000.

The most expensive Royal Oak Jumbo in yellow gold was this “B Series” sold in November 2020 for CHF 150,000.

Produced in 1986, this was one of the first Royal Oak Perpetual Calendars in gold. Last January it sold for EUR 260’000.

In December 2021, this Perpetual Calendar in platinum and pink gold dating back to 1997 fetched CHF 178’000.

This stainless steel Perpetual Calendar produced in 1996 features an extremely unusual salmon dial. Sold in November 2021 for CHF 462’500.

Vintage Watch Fairs - Basel (1932)

The picture above brings us back to 1932 and the second edition of the Basel Watch Fair. This booth showcased the products of the Watchmakers Community (Collectivité des fabricants d’horlogerie) from La Chaux-de-Fonds, an influential group that included fifty manufacturers and accounted for half the national output.
The talk of the town was about two kinds of timepieces in particular – the digital models (above) that enjoyed a growing popularity after their launch in 1931, and a couple of newly patented automatics, among which the Wig-Wag (below).

Vintage library - L'Horlogerie Une Tradition Helvétique (1948)

Published in 1948 under the direction of the renowned historian Alfred Chapuis, the 350-page book "Watchmaking" is a celebration of this typically Swiss industry. After a brief history of time measurement devices since the 14th Century – the era of bell tower clocks – each one of the following chapters deals with a different type of timekeeper and craft: desk clocks and marine chronometers, pocket watches and dashboard clocks, enamel painting and engraving, adjustment and lubrication, research and development.

The wristwatch is given the space it deserves as the most popular and profitable product of the national industry. The very first timepieces to be worn on the wrist, made in the early 19th Century, are the objects of the drawings found in these pages.
A series of illustrations shows the evolution of the wristwatch in the first half of the 20thCentury. Above: wristwatches dating back to the 1915-1925 period

Eleven examples of the 1925-1935 production.

A few familiar faces among the timepieces of the 1935-1945 period.

Desk clocks were still much in fashion in the late 1940s.

ITALIANO

Vintage Press - Journal Suisse d'Horlogerie (1956)

As the cover of this 1956 edition of the Swiss Watchmaking Magazine suggests, the main feature deals with the rating certificates issued by the Swiss official testing agencies.

Its purpose is to inform retailers and their staff about the testing procedures and the meaning of their results, so that they pass on these explanations to customers.

The report on the “Montres et Bijoux” exhibition held in Geneva features a number of jewelry watches for ladies – such timepieces played a crucial role in the industry’s turnover.

In view of the upcoming Christmas gifts season, the magazine offers a few tips to shopkeepers on how to decorate their shop windows and make them attractive to passers-by.

ITALIANO

Modelled on original creations from the 1920s (see the vintage ad below), this timepiece sticks with the same Arabic numerals and luminescent beige hands as the dials from the era. Christmas gifts ideas

What is the ideal Christmas gift for a watch lover? A watch, of course. And apart from that? The Swiss company Initium comes up with a couple of ideas. The first one is a watchmaking course guided by a master watchmaker. It is open to everyone and does not require any watchmaking knowledge or skills. The participants can create their own Swiss watch in one of the three workshops located in Geneva, Le Noirmont and Gebertingen, respectively. The second option is even more practical – a watch assembling kit which includes all the needed material and instructions to assemble each part of a timepiece. Visit the Initium website to know more.

ITALIANO

New releases - De Bethune DB25GMT Starry Varius

This new adaptation of the DB25 World Traveller features a polished grade 5 titanium case with a 42 mm diameter, integrated openworked lugs, and a screw-down sapphire caseback providing a glimpse of the in-house hand-wound movement. Starting from the centre, the dial indicates the date on the first disc with the help of its jumping date hand, which can be adjusted via a corrector at 6 o'clock. The hours of the first 24-hour time zone (home or reference time) are marked by the microsphere which appears to be floating weightless in its corridor. This function can be set in both directions (clockwise/counter-clockwise) via the crown. The local time is indicated by the blued hands whose curvature follows the relief of the dial, and can also be set by the crown, in both directions.

New releases - U-Boat Capsoil Doppiotempo

The design features and technical specifications of two models come together. The 45 mm stainless steel case features two crowns, one for setting the time and date, the other for adjusting the “doppiotempo” (dual time) function, and the rotating internal bezel that allows the second time zone setting. The special oil filling first adopted by the Capsoil watch creates the illusion of absence of the glass and amplifies the three-dimensional effect. The bubble floating freely on the dial compensates the temperature variations. The case back features the Locking ring system with quick battery replacement.
