New releases - Breitling Top Time Chevrolet Corvette

The Top Time Classic Cars Capsule Collection pays homage to three classic sports cars from the 1960s. The Top Time Chevrolet Corvette in red and black is based on the design of the Corvette C2, often referred to as the “Sting Ray”. The 42 mm case houses the COSC-certified Breitling Caliber 25, a self-winding 1/8^th of a second chronograph movement with a power reserve of about 42 hours. The dial displays the car logo at the 12 o’clock position.

As the cover of this 1956 edition of the Swiss Watchmaking Magazine suggests, the main feature deals with the rating certificates issued by the Swiss official testing agencies.

Its purpose is to inform retailers and their staff about the testing procedures and the meaning of their results, so that they pass on these explanations to customers.

The report on the “Montres et Bijoux” exhibition held in Geneva features a number of jewelry watches for ladies – such timepieces played a crucial role in the industry’s turnover.

In view of the upcoming Christmas gifts season, the magazine offers a few tips to shopkeepers on how to decorate their shop windows and make them attractive to passers-by.

New releases - Alpina Startimer Pilot Heritage Automatic

Modelled on original creations from the 1920s (see the vintage ad below), this timepiece sticks with the same Arabic numerals and luminescent beige hands as the dials from the era. The 44 mm case hosts an automatic movement with 38 hours power reserve, driving three hands and the date at 3 o’clock. The "onion" crown was the standard in the last century, designed for optimum grip, even with flying gloves on. The push-button at 4 o’clock opens the steel case back, allowing the AL-525 automatic movement to be seen. The Startimer Pilot Heritage Automatic will be limited to 288 pieces.

 

Christmas gifts ideas

What is the ideal Christmas gift for a watch lover? A watch, of course. And apart from that? The Swiss company Initium comes up with a couple of ideas. The first one is a watchmaking course guided by a master watchmaker. It is open to everyone and does not require any watchmaking knowledge or skills. The participants can create their own Swiss watch in one of the three workshops located in Geneva, Le Noirmont and Gebertingen, respectively. The second option is even more practical – a watch assembling kit which includes all the needed material and instructions to assemble each part of a timepiece. Vintage ad - Gay Frères (1948)

"The bracelets which are most frequently copied". A long-time supplier to Rolex, Gay Frères created such iconic products as the Oyster bracelet seen here. This ad points out that competitors did not hesitate to market virtually identical models. Fifty years later, Rolex took over Gay Frères.

New releases - De Bethune DB25GMT Starry Varius

This new adaptation of the DB25 World Traveller features a polished grade 5 titanium case with a 42 mm diameter, integrated openworked lugs, and a screw-down sapphire caseback providing a glimpse of the in-house hand-wound movement. Starting from the centre, the dial indicates the date on the first disc with the help of its jumping date hand, which can be adjusted via a corrector at 6 o'clock. The hours of the first 24-hour time zone (home or reference time) are marked by the microsphere which appears to be floating weightless in its corridor. This function can be set in both directions (clockwise/counter-clockwise) via the crown. The local time is indicated by the blued hands whose curvature follows the relief of the dial, and can also be set by the crown, in both directions.
