New releases - Grand Seiko Spring Drive

Available in February 2022, the new Grand Seiko hosts the latest Spring Drive Caliber 9RA2. The textured dial and frost finish of the movement echo the atmosphere of the white birch forests in Shinshu during Winter. The second hand owes its smooth glide motion to the Spring Drive technology, which combines the high torque of a mechanical watch with the high precision integrated circuit control system of an electronic watch (error rate: ±10 seconds per month). The power reserve amounts to five days (120 hours).

 

Vintage ad - Girard-Perregaux

"A record - 662 Observatory certificates put Girard-Perregaux at the forefront of the international masters of chronometry". This ad dating back to 1967 celebrates the results achieved by the manufacturer in the demanding tests set up by the Neuchâtel Observatory. 662 Girard-Perregaux standard production Chronometers HF were issued the institution's accuracy certificates - an unprecedented deed. They all featured the Clinergic 21 escapement, whose frequency of 36,000 vibrations per hour was the world's highest at the time.

Vintage library - L'Horlogerie Une Tradition Helvétique (1948)

Published in 1948 under the direction of the renowned historian Alfred Chapuis, the 350-page book "Watchmaking" is a celebration of this typically Swiss industry. After a brief history of time measurement devices since the 14^th Century – the era of bell tower clocks – each one of the following chapters deals with a different type of timekeeper and craft: desk clocks and marine chronometers, pocket watches and dashboard clocks, enamel painting and engraving, adjustment and lubrication, research and development.

The wristwatch is given the space it deserves as the most popular and profitable product of the national industry. The very first timepieces to be worn on the wrist, made in the early 19^th Century, are the objects of the drawings found in these pages.

A series of illustrations shows the evolution of the wristwatch in the first half of the 20^thCentury. Above: wristwatches dating back to the 1915-1925 period

Pubblicato nel 1948 sotto la supervisione del prestigioso storico Alfred Chapuis, il libro "L'Orologeria" (350 pagine) è una celebrazione di quest’industria tipicamente svizzera.
Dopo una breve storia della misura del tempo dal 14esimo secolo – l’era degli orologi da campanile – ciascuno dei capitoli seguenti è dedicato a un tipo diverso di segnatempo e di mestiere: orologi da tavolo e cronometri di bordo, orologi da tasca e da cruscotto, pittura su smalto e incisione, regolazione e lubrificazione, ricerca e sviluppo.
L’orologio da polso ha il rilievo che merita come prodotto più popolare e redditizio dell’industria nazionale. I disegni che troviamo nelle pagine riprodotte in alto mostrano i primi segnatempo da indossare al polso, creati all’inizio del 19esimo secolo.
Una serie di illustrazioni descrive l’evoluzione dell’orologio da polso nella prima metà del 20esimo secolo. Dall’alto: esemplari del periodo 1915-1925, 1925-1935 e 1935-1945 (con alcuni modelli di aspetto familiare…).
Gli orologi da tavolo erano molto apprezzati anche alla fine degli Anni 40: la tavola a colori ne mostra due.

New releases - Breitling Top Time Chevrolet Corvette

The Top Time Classic Cars Capsule Collection pays homage to three classic sports cars from the 1960s. The Top Time Chevrolet Corvette in red and black is based on the design of the Corvette C2, often referred to as the “Sting Ray”. The 42 mm case houses the COSC-certified Breitling Caliber 25, a self-winding 1/8^th of a second chronograph movement with a power reserve of about 42 hours. The dial displays the car logo at the 12 o’clock position. 

 

Vintage Press - Journal Suisse d'Horlogerie (1956)

As the cover of this 1956 edition of the Swiss Watchmaking Magazine suggests, the main feature deals with the rating certificates issued by the Swiss official testing agencies.

Its purpose is to inform retailers and their staff about the testing procedures and the meaning of their results, so that they pass on these explanations to customers.

The report on the “Montres et Bijoux” exhibition held in Geneva features a number of jewelry watches for ladies – such timepieces played a crucial role in the industry’s turnover.

In view of the upcoming Christmas gifts season, the magazine offers a few tips to shopkeepers on how to decorate their shop windows and make them attractive to passers-by.

Come indica la copertina di questo Journal Suisse d’Horlogerie del 1956, la sezione principale tratta i certificati di precisione rilasciati dalle agenzie svizzere di controllo ufficiali. Lo scopo è informare i commercianti e il loro personale di vendita sulle procedure di controllo e sul significato dei loro risultati, in modo che possano trasmettere queste spiegazioni ai clienti.

Il reportage sulla recente mostra “Montres et Bijoux” di Ginevra presenta numerosi orologi gioiello per signora: questi prodotti hanno un peso determinante nel fatturato delle Case.
In vista dell’imminente stagione dei regali natalizi, la rivista offre qualche consiglio ai rivenditori su come allestire le vetrine per renderle più attraenti.

New releases - Alpina Startimer Pilot Heritage Automatic

Modelled on original creations from the 1920s (see the vintage ad below), this timepiece sticks with the same Arabic numerals and luminescent beige hands as the dials from the era. The 44 mm case hosts an automatic movement with 38 hours power reserve, driving three hands and the date at 3 o’clock. The "onion" crown was the standard in the last century, designed for optimum grip, even with flying gloves on. The push-button at 4 o’clock opens the steel case back, allowing the AL-525 automatic movement to be seen. The Startimer Pilot Heritage Automatic will be limited to 288 pieces.

 

Christmas gifts ideas

What is the ideal Christmas gift for a watch lover? A watch, of course. And apart from that? The Swiss company Initium comes up with a couple of ideas. The first one is a watchmaking course guided by a master watchmaker. It is open to everyone and does not require any watchmaking knowledge or skills. The participants can create their own Swiss watch in one of the three workshops located in Geneva, Le Noirmont and Gebertingen, respectively. The second option is even more practical – a watch assembling kit which includes all the needed material and instructions to assemble each part of a timepiece.
