Fred Glover vola ancora

Fred Glover, veterano del 9. Battaglione, ha festeggiato il novantesimo compleanno con un lancio in tandem presso l'aerodromo di Headcorn, nel Kent. Non solo un omaggio a un passato da eroe con i paracadutisti britannici, dal D-Day in avanti. L'iniziativa aveva anche uno scopo benefico: la raccolta di fondi per la ricerca sul cancro. Ecco la testimonianza filmata di un'impresa straordinaria.

La verità squarcia la nebbia della mente

Una tragedia del passato emerge a fatica e a brandelli da una memoria che affonda inesorabilmente nella demenza senile. Maud ha perso una sorella e non ha mai smesso di cercarla. Poi ha perso l'amica Elizabeth e cerca pure lei. Fino quando tutto diventa confuso. Chi sta cercando? Dove? E perché? Il mondo che la circonda diventa incomprensibile, i familiari irriconoscibili, la nebbia della mente sempre più impenetrabile. Eppure il lampo della verità riuscirà a squarciarla. 

Il romanzo è prima di tutto un viaggio doloroso nel mondo dell'Alzheimer, descritto con efficacia tale da insegnare qualcosa a chi non ne conosce le caratteristiche. Poi è un intreccio ben concepito in cui si alternano il racconto lucido del passato e quello sempre più sfuocato che accompagna il decorso della malattia della protagonista.

Gli orologi digitali degli Anni 30 hanno caratteristiche simili, nel senso che tutti usano dischi girevoli al posto delle lancette per visualizzare le funzioni del tempo attraverso finestrelle scavate sulla parte frontale della cassa. L'indicazione dell'ora "salta" - di qui il nome italiano di "saltarello" - di una posizione al passaggio di ogni ora. Questo Cortébert è probabilmente unico poiché anche l'indicazione dei minuti "salta"...

 

Recensioni - Gone Girl

Un thriller magistrale

 

Un thriller magistrale nell'intreccio e nel ritmo. Al centro c'è un matrimonio avvelenato dal tradimento, dai sospetti e dal rancore. Chi è il primo sospettato se sparisce la moglie? Il marito. Ovvio per tutti: i vicini, i parenti, i media attirati dallo scoop, e soprattutto la polizia. Però non bisogna fidarsi delle apparenze, e nemmeno di quello che sembra esserci al di là delle apparenze. Perfino il lettore disincantato faticherà ad orientarsi nella realtà e nella mente contorte che si celano dietro il dramma familiare. I colpi di scena sono numerosi, ma non è necessariamente questa la marcia in più di Gone Girl. A me il romanzo è piaciuto soprattutto perché l'autrice non prende scorciatoie improbabili come accade spesso in questo genere narrativo. I pensieri e i comportamenti dei personaggi sono plausibili, e lo stesso si può dire delle loro conseguenze, anche quando il caso ci mette lo zampino. C'è uno studio psicologico accurato dietro la creazione di protagonisti così veri, nella loro percezione alterata della vita, da rendere logico un finale apparentemente paradossale.
