New releases - Breitling Top Time Chevrolet Corvette

The Top Time Classic Cars Capsule Collection pays homage to three classic sports cars from the 1960s. The Top Time Chevrolet Corvette in red and black is based on the design of the Corvette C2, often referred to as the “Sting Ray”. The 42 mm case houses the COSC-certified Breitling Caliber 25, a self-winding 1/8th of a second chronograph movement with a power reserve of about 42 hours. The dial displays the car logo at the 12 o’clock position.

Vintage Press - Journal Suisse d'Horlogerie (1956)

As the cover of this 1956 edition of the Swiss Watchmaking Magazine suggests, the main feature deals with the rating certificates issued by the Swiss official testing agencies.

Its purpose is to inform retailers and their staff about the testing procedures and the meaning of their results, so that they pass on these explanations to customers.

The report on the “Montres et Bijoux” exhibition held in Geneva features a number of jewelry watches for ladies – such timepieces played a crucial role in the industry’s turnover.

In view of the upcoming Christmas gifts season, the magazine offers a few tips to shopkeepers on how to decorate their shop windows and make them attractive to passers-by.

ITALIANO

New releases - Alpina Startimer Pilot Heritage Automatic

Modelled on original creations from the 1920s (see the vintage ad below), this timepiece sticks with the same Arabic numerals and luminescent beige hands as the dials from the era. The 44 mm case hosts an automatic movement with 38 hours power reserve, driving three hands and the date at 3 o’clock. The "onion" crown was the standard in the last century, designed for optimum grip, even with flying gloves on. The push-button at 4 o’clock opens the steel case back, allowing the AL-525 automatic movement to be seen. The Startimer Pilot Heritage Automatic will be limited to 288 pieces.

Christmas gifts ideas

What is the ideal Christmas gift for a watch lover? A watch, of course. And apart from that? The Swiss company Initium comes up with a couple of ideas. The first one is a watchmaking course guided by a master watchmaker. It is open to everyone and does not require any watchmaking knowledge or skills. The participants can create their own Swiss watch in one of the three workshops located in Geneva, Le Noirmont and Gebertingen, respectively. The second option is even more practical – a watch assembling kit which includes all the needed material and instructions to assemble each part of a timepiece. Visit the Initium website to know more.

New releases - De Bethune DB25GMT Starry Varius

This new adaptation of the DB25 World Traveller features a polished grade 5 titanium case with a 42 mm diameter, integrated openworked lugs, and a screw-down sapphire caseback providing a glimpse of the in-house hand-wound movement. Starting from the centre, the dial indicates the date on the first disc with the help of its jumping date hand, which can be adjusted via a corrector at 6 o'clock. The hours of the first 24-hour time zone (home or reference time) are marked by the microsphere which appears to be floating weightless in its corridor. This function can be set in both directions (clockwise/counter-clockwise) via the crown. The local time is indicated by the blued hands whose curvature follows the relief of the dial, and can also be set by the crown, in both directions.

New releases - U-Boat Capsoil Doppiotempo

The design features and technical specifications of two models come together. The 45 mm stainless steel case features two crowns, one for setting the time and date, the other for adjusting the “doppiotempo” (dual time) function, and the rotating internal bezel that allows the second time zone setting. The special oil filling first adopted by the Capsoil watch creates the illusion of absence of the glass and amplifies the three-dimensional effect. The bubble floating freely on the dial compensates the temperature variations. The case back features the Locking ring system with quick battery replacement.

Henry Graves Jr's Patek Philippe chronograph

This Ref. 1436 split-second chronograph by Patek Philippe is the undisputed star of the Christie's auction that will take place in Hong Kong on 27 November. Henry Graves Jr., the legendary American collector, ordered it in 1946 and bought it one year later. Its excellent condition, mechanical complexity and rarity, along with the Breguet numerals on the dial, account for the estimate of US$ 1,500,000-3,000,000. Only 140 examples of the Ref. 1436 were made during the 33-year production period (1938-1971). One of them is featured in this video clip by Hora, the Milan-based Italian Association of Antique Watches Lovers (language: Italian). Enjoy!

New releases - Louis Erard Régulateur x atelier oï

The new dial of the Louis Erard Regulator is the work of atelier oï, a workshop based in La Neuveville that works in the fields of architecture and design. The surface is engraved with asymmetrical rays that radiate from the hands. The wearer has to mentally reconstruct the puzzle of hour angles in order to read the time. However, all the links are not broken: the minute-circle still appears around the edge of the dial, with a more pronounced line every five minutes. Retail price CHF 3,500. Limited edition of 178 pieces.

The N°1 Deep Sea Special goes to auction

The catalog of the Christie’s Rare Watches Auction on 8 November 2021 (Hotel Four Seasons Les Bergues, Geneva) features the Rolex Deep Sea Special that made the first dive attached to Auguste Piccard's bathyscaphe Trieste off the Island of Ponza
in 1953. This history-making expedition paved the way to the trip down to the bottom of the Mariana Trench (1960, 10,916 meters). I related the two feats in my books about Rolex: Rolex dalla A alla Z (in Italian) and Rolex 1905-1960 (in English and Italian). Both feature images of a display model made by Rolex in the early 1960s to celebrate the event, currently owned by the Musée International d'Horlogerie in La Chaux-de-Fonds.

The "N°1" entrusted to Christie's is the first of the three identified prototypes of Deep Sea Special, and the only one with "low" glass - the other two being equipped with the thicker and higher glass that Rolex developed later on for further extreme testing.
Will the "N°1" break the record set by the Paul Newman's Daytona chronograph that sold for $ 17.8 million in 2017?

The Revue Internationale de l’Horlogerie (RIH) was a trade magazine published monthly in La Chaux-de-Fonds (Switzerland). Its April 1952 issue was fully devoted to the self-winding wristwatch, a product that over twenty years after its debut still struggled to gain widespread acceptance among the public. As the Bales Watch Fair was approaching, the obvious intent of the RIH was to promote the sales of a timepiece that customers still found unreliable and too expensive.

The brief history of the self-winding watch is the work of Alfred Chapuis, the most reputed historian of watchmaking at the time. Abraham-Louis Perrelet is mentioned as the inventor of the “Perpetuel” timepiece in the 1770s. A few years later, such great watchmakers as Abraham-Louis Breguet and Louis Recordon patented their own ingenious systems. The British John Harwood was the first to create an automatic wristwatch in the late 1920s. In the mid-1930s, the Perpetual by Rolex paved the way to the modern automatic watch.

The next pages feature a wide selection of contemporary self-winding movements presented by their manufacturers. Photo above: calibers by ETA and AS.

Most exhibitors at the upcoming Basel Watch Show were presenting automatic watches. These pages feature products by Rolex, Movado, Omega and Breitling among others.

The final pages are devoted to the impact of the self-winding watch on world markets. Retailers from all over the globe were invited to write about their experiences. Photo above: reports from Brazil and Canada.

ITALIANO
La sezione finale è dedicata all’impatto dell’orologio automatico sui mercati mondiali.
