The "Jumbo" Royal Oak had been missing from the Audemars Piguet catalog for a few years when the brand relaunched it in a limited series meant to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the watch. Made in steel (with anthracite or salmon dial) and in gold (with anthracite or champagne dial), the 1,000 pieces hit the market in 1992. Their common features were the transparent case back and the 21Kt gold skeleton rotor, whose shape paid tribute to the octagonal bezel. At the time, the retail price in Italian currency amounted to 11,550,000 Lire for the steel version, that is nearly four times more than a Rolex Submariner (3,100,000 Lire). The prices were closer when it came to the gold versions - 27,500,000 Lire for the Royal Oak Jubilee and 20,100,000 Lire for the Submariner. The reason for that is the cost of manufacturing the complex Royal Oak bracelet, steel being far harder to work than gold.
