New releases - Pierre DeRoche Annual Calendar

The newest addition to the GrandCliff family displays the date 364 days out of 365, only requiring correction when the day changes to 1st March. Equipped with a Dubois Dépraz module, the movement has a diameter of 32 mm allowing for a large date disc and therefore adequate readability. The month indicator at 7 o’clock consists of a red disc under the dial. The quickset functions work via the crown (date) and a corrector (month). The 41 mm case is in stainless steel.

Vintage press - Journal Suisse d'Horlogerie (1972)

Largely devoted to the Swiss Watch Fair in Basel, this 1972 issue of the Journal Suisse d’Horlogerie features an illustrated review of the event.

These pages introduce a few products that are familiar faces to modern day collectors, such as the Movado Museum Watch and the Zenith El Primero.

Fashion watches are the subject of a six-page report that deals with the models by Bulova. Jean-Samuel Wuhl designed the ladies timepiece seen here, an Accutron whose battery is housed in an element of the bracelet. His creation was awarded the 1971 Geneva prize.

The survey about shop windows decorations features the works of, among others, Mrs Mamie for Vacheron et Constantin (page’s top photo) and Mrs Schmid for Rolex (pictures 5, 6 and 7).

Dedicata in buona parte alla Fiera svizzera dell’orologeria di Basilea, questa rivista del 1972 contiene un ampio reportage illustrato sull’evento. Queste pagine sono dedicate ad alcuni modelli che hanno un aspetto familiare per i collezionisti di oggi, tra i quali il Museum Watch di Movado e El Primero di Zenith.
Gli orologi di design sono l’argomento di un servizio di sei pagine che tratta i modelli Bulova. Jean-Samuel Wuhl è il creatore di questo esemplare, un Accutron con pila alloggiata in un elemento del bracciale che si è aggiudicato il Premio Città di Ginevra nerl 1971.
La rassegna dedicata alle decorazioni delle vetrine presenta i contributi, fra gli altri, della signora Mamie per Vacheron et Constantin (foto in alto) e della signora Schmid per Rolex (foto 5, 6 e 7).

Vintage ads - Rolex (1953)

This ad features a Rolex Datejust, but the larger picture and better part of the text deal with the company’s latest achievement in the field of serial-produced chronometers: “the amazing number of 140 Rolex movements had qualified for – and were awarded – the precious, coveted Kew ‘A’ certificate”. The 23.7 mm manual winding calibers submitted to the British Observatory passed “with flying colors” the 44-day test originally designed for larger chronometers. The ad also reminds that “the first wristwatch ever to pass the Kew ‘A’ Observatory test was a small 11 ligne Rolex, and this was way back in 1914!”

I calibri a carica manuale da 23,7 mm iscritti presso l’Osservatorio britannico hanno superato “a pieni voti” il test di 44 giorni concepito originalmente per cronometri di dimensioni più grandi. L’annuncio ricorda anche che “il primo orologio da polso della storia in grado di superare il test ‘A’ dell’Osservatorio di Kew fu un piccolo Rolex da 11 linee, e questo nel lontano 1914!”

New releases – Alpina Startimer Pilot Manufacture

The sixth Alpina in-house movement is a tribute to the “bumper” automatic used by the company in the 1950s.  Instead of turning  360° like a contemporary rotor, the oscillating weight turned 120° - on both sides a spring sent the mass back in the opposite direction and facilitated the winding of the movement. The contemporary caliber shares the same geometry and inspiration but for two details: the oscillating weight rotates 330° rather than 120° and a blade replaces the traditionally shaped springs. The Caliber AL-709 Is visible through the open case back of the new Alpina Startimer Pilot Manufacture.

 

The AP Royal Oak - A king of the auction market

Antiquorum celebrated 50 years of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak by recalling its long time history with the iconic watch designed by Gérald Genta and introduced in 1972. The Geneva auctioneer recorded nearly 1,000 Royal Oaks presented for sale since 1992, of which nearly eight out of ten were sold. This thirty year archive provides an interesting reference on the evolution of the model’s value. Here are a few examples (pictures courtesy of Antiquorum Genéve).

This Royal Oak Jumbo “A Series” (number 88) in stainless steel was produced in 1972. Equipped with its Gay Freres bracelet dated 1.72, it sold for CHF 40,000 in 2012.

Nine years later (July 2021), this stainless steel Royal Oak Jumbo dating back to 1976 sold for CHF 286,000.

The most expensive Royal Oak Jumbo in yellow gold was this “B Series” sold in November 2020 for CHF 150,000.

Produced in 1986, this was one of the first Royal Oak Perpetual Calendars in gold. Last January it sold for EUR 260’000.

In December 2021, this Perpetual Calendar in platinum and pink gold dating back to 1997 fetched CHF 178’000.

This stainless steel Perpetual Calendar produced in 1996 features an extremely unusual salmon dial. Sold in November 2021 for CHF 462’500.

 

Vintage Watch Fairs - Basel (1932)

The picture above brings us back to 1932 and the second edition of the Basel Watch Fair. This booth showcased the products of the Watchmakers Community (Collectivité des fabricants d’horlogerie) from La Chaux-de-Fonds, an influential group that included fifty manufacturers and accounted for half the national output.

The talk of the town was about two kinds of timepieces in particular – the digital models (above) that enjoyed a growing popularity after their launch in 1931, and a couple of newly patented automatics, among which the Wig-Wag (below).

La foto in alto ci porta indietro nel tempo fino al 1932 e alla seconda edizione della Fiera di Basilea. Questo stand esponeva i prodotti della Comunità dei Fabbricanti (Collectivité des Fabricants d’horlogerie) di La Chaux-de-Fonds, importante gruppo che riuniva cinquanta aziende e rappresentava metà della produzione nazionale.
Le novità sulla bocca di tutti erano due orologi in particolare: i digitali (foto al centro), che godevano di crescente popolarità dopo il loro debutto nel 1931, e un paio di automatici appena brevettati, tra i quali il Wig-Wag (sopra).
