Vintage timepieces - Citizen Chronograph (1970s)

Introduced in 1970, the Citizen Automatic Chronographs hit the shelves one year after the models by Seiko, its main competitor on the Japanese and international market. Both manufacturers chose the vertical clutch rather than the horizontal clutch used by conventional Swiss chronographs. The latter consists of at least three toothed wheels, while the Japanese solution does not require any additional transmission systems, thus lowering wear associated with friction. Unlike the Seiko movements, the Citizen 8100A Caliber features the manual winding function. At the time of release, it was the world’s flattest self-winding chronograph. The record stayed unbeaten until 1987.

Presentati nel 1970, i cronografi automatici Citizen arrivarono nei negozi un anno dopo quelli prodotti da Seiko, principale concorrente sui mercati giapponese e internazionale. Entrambi i fabbricanti preferirono l’innesto verticale all’innesto orizzontale adottato dai cronografi svizzeri convenzionali. Quest’ultimo consiste di almeno tre ruote dentate, mentre i brevetti giapponesi non richiedono sistemi di trasmissione aggiuntivi e limitano così l’usura dovuta agli attriti. Al contrario dei movimenti Seiko, il Citizen 8100A possiede la funzione di carica manuale. All’epoca del lancio, era il movimento cronografico automatico più sottile del mondo: un record imbattuto fino al 1987.

Vintage timepieces - Omega Seamaster 120 (1960s)

Launched in 1966, the Seamaster 120 was the small brother of the Seamaster 300, in that it offered a thinner and less extreme alternative to the growing public of diver watches lovers. The model was available in two versions: manual winding without date and Automatic with date.

Lanciato nel 1966, il Seamaster 120 era il fratello minore del Seamaster 300, nel senso che offriva un'alternativa più sottile e meno "estrema" al pubblico crescente degli appassionati di orologi subacquei. Il modello era disponibile in due versioni: a carica manuale senza data e automatico con data.

Novità - Memphis Belle Predator Heritage Black Sea

 

Prossimo al debutto, il modello avrà una cassa di bronzo annerita chimicamente e un movimento manuale sviluppato a Grenchen (Svizzera) partendo dall’Unitas 6497-2. Le differenze rispetto alla meccanica originale sono numerose: i ponti separati, la funzione d’arresto del bilanciere a corona estratta, la regolazione a collo di cigno, il rivestimento PVD nero, la decorazione a côtes de Genève curve, il bilanciere con bracci ricurvi riconducibile a un brevetto di Einstein. Il quadrante riporterà il logo della X Flottiglia M.A.S. e una decorazione ispirata alle sue imprese.

New releases – Frederique Constant Highlife Heart Beat

The new collection revisits the iconic design of the first Heart Beat timepiece, which reveals the inner workings of its movement at midday, and brings it into the 21^st century. Located at the pole of the globe decoration on the dial, the aperture is finished with three luminescent hands. You can look straight into the automatic FC-310 caliber with power reserve of 38 hours, from both front and back through the sapphire crystal.

A few views of the Rolex administrative headquarters and watchmaking workshops in Geneva city center. 

 

The “bird’s nest” bridge leading to them, completed in 2012, was entirely financed by the foundation that owns Rolex and named after Hans Wilsdorf, the company’s founder. 

 

The red arrow indicates the details about the ongoing construction of a new building. Rolex also owns a 130,000 square metres complex in the south-west of the city, a production unit in Geneva’s eastern region and, of course, the huge manufacturing facilities in Biel/Bienne.

Alcune immagini del complesso amministrativo e industriale di Rolex nel centro di Ginevra. Il ponte a “nido d’uccello” in primo piano, completato nel 2012, è stato interamente finanziato dalla fondazione proprietaria della compagnia e battezzato con il nome del suo fondatore, Hans Wilsdorf. La freccia rossa indica i dettagli dei lavori in corso per la costruzione di un nuovo edificio. Vintage timepieces - Exaequo Softwatch (1991)

Exaequo era una ditta di Ginevra che presentò diversi orologi dal design originale nella seconda metà degli Anni 80 e nella prima dei 90. La Fiera di Basilea del 1991 fu teatro del lancio del Softwatch, il cui nome e aspetto alludevano al dipinto “La persistenza della memoria” di Salvador Dali (1931, vedi sotto). L’artista spiegò che i tre orologi molli non sono “nulla più del molle, stravagante, solitario, paranoico-critico Camembert dello spazio e del tempo … Duri o morbidi, che importa! L’importante è che siano precisi”. Equipaggiato con un cinturino di pelle imitazione coccodrillo e con un vetro zaffiro sopra il quadrante, il Softwatch fu commercializzato presso negozi di oggettistica e grandi magazzini.

Exaequo was a Geneva company that introduced a few original watch designs in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The 1991 Basel Fair saw the launch of the Softwatch, whose name and shape hinted to Salvador Dali and his 1931 painting “The persistence of memory” (see above). In the artist’s words, the three soft watches he portrayed are “nothing more than the soft, extravagant, solitary, paranoiac-critical Camembert cheese of space and time... Hard or soft, what difference does it make! As long as they tell time accurately”. Fitted with a croco fashioned leather strap and a sapphire crystal, the Exaequo Softwatch was sold in the specialized shops and department stores of several countries.

Il 2020 ha visto la cancellazione dei principali eventi fieristici legati all'orologeria, da Basilea a Ginevra, ma anche la nascita di una manifestazione nuova. Il 26 e 27 settembre prossimi, il Museo delle Macchine Agricole "Orsi" di Tortona ospiterà la prima edizione di Watches Of Italy, rassegna dedicata alla filiera orologiera italiana. La locandina qui sopra presenta la lista degli oltre 40 espositori. Gli ideatori, i produttori, gli artigiani, i designer e i progettisti presenteranno personalmente ai visitatori il frutto del loro lavoro. Parteciperanno anche alcuni dei blogger più apprezzati dai navigatori del web.

 

New releases - Breitling Endurance Pro

The new Breitling Endurance Pro features a black dial and a black bidirectional rotating bezel with engraved cardinal compass points (N, S, E, and W). Its five variations are presented on a Diver Pro rubber strap in the same color as the inner bezel ring. At the heart of the timepiece is the COSC-certified Breitling Caliber 82 with SuperQuartz™ technology. Water-resistant to 10 bar/100 meters/330 feet, the case is in Breitlight®. Vintage watches - Rolex Oyster Perpetual Ref. 3131 (early 1950s)

A Ref. 3131 Oyster Perpetual, a case opener tool and Volume 3 of the 1945 Rolex Vade Mecum - "How the waterproof watch was created". This timepiece dating back to the early 1950s is a late "Bubbleback" made when the updated Perpetual movements and references were already available.

Un Oyster Perpetual Ref. 3131, l'attrezzo usato per aprire le casse e il Volume 3 del Rolex Vade Mecum (1945): "Come fu creato l'orologio impermeabile". Questo "Ovetto" dei primi Anni 50 fu fabbricato quando erano già in commercio i Perpetual con movimenti e numeri di referenza aggiornati.

 

Vintage timepieces - Girard-Perregaux Laureato (1990s)

Nel 1975 Girard-Perregaux lanciò il Laureato come orologio sportivo al quarzo di spessore limitato. Vent’anni più tardi, il nuovo movimento automatico di manifattura consentì di crearne una versione automatica che mantenne le caratteristiche principali del suo predecessore: la lunetta ottagonale su base rotonda, il bracciale integrato, il quadrante a nido d’ape e le dimensioni relativamente ridotte, almeno in rapporto agli standard del 21esimo secolo. L’orologio era impermeabile a 10 atmosfere. Negli Anni 90 il Calibro 3100 fu utilizzato dagli orologi di alcune Case di gamma alta come Cartier e Vacheron Constantin. Fu concepito per rendere possibile l’abbinamento con un modulo cronografico o di calendario.

Girard-Perregaux introduced the first Laureato in 1975 as a thin sports watch with quartz movement. Twenty years later, a new in-house movement enabled the brand to launch a self-winding version of the model that retained the main features of its electronic predecessor – the eight-sided bezel above a round base, integrated bracelet, hobnail dial and comparatively small size, at least by 21^st Century standards. The watch was waterproof up to 10 bars. The Caliber 3100 is found in a few timepieces of the 1990s by such high-end brands as Cartier and Vacheron Constantin. It was designed to allow for the addition of chronograph or calendar modules.

New releases - Montblanc 1858 Split Second Chronograph

Montblanc reinterprets a 44 mm Minerva military monopusher chronograph, with the calibre 17/29, from the 1930s with a dial comprising a snail shape tachymeter scale in the centre and a telemeter scale on the internal flange. The new timepiece comes in a vibrant blue colour executed in gradated enamel combined with a 44 mm satin-finished, grade 5 titanium case.

Vintage timepieces - Vacheron Constantin 222 (1970s)

Launched in 1977 in order to celebrate the brand's 222th anniversary, the 222 model was available in steel, steel/gold and gold, as well as in two case designs: 'tonneau' and square. The latter is the rarer, having only been produced in a few hundred pieces before the model was discontinued in 1984.

New releases – Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control Memovox Timer

For its new generation of alarm watches, the manufacturer has revised the self-winding calibre 956. The transparent sapphire back demanded a complete redesign of the striking mechanism, with the gong now attached to the case side. The additional Timer function enables the owner to set the alarm based on the number of hours that should elapse before the alarm rings. 

The dial is laid out in concentric rings, in two shades of blue with a sunray finish, complemented by an inner ring engraved in bas-relief with polished numerals. On this inner ring, the elapsed hours-until-alarm are indicated by a small hand tipped with a red JL logo.

Vintage timepieces - Bulova Thermatron (1980)

Presentato nel 1980 come “l’orologio da polso ad alimentazione termoelettrica”, il Thermatron si basava sulla scoperta di Thomas Seebeck. Il fisico estone-tedesco dimostrò che la connessione tra due leghe scaldate a temperature diverse produce una corrente elettrica.

Il termogeneratore dell’orologio consiste in due placche metalliche sulle quali sono fissati quattro gruppi di 175 termocoppie ciascuno, che producono un voltaggio complessivo in grado di mettere in marcia il movimento quando si raggiunge una differenza di temperatura di 1,5 gradi centigradi. Questo scarto si ottiene mediante la carrure di fibra di vetro situata tra il fondo cassa (a contatto con il polso) e la lunetta (temperatura ambiente) d’acciaio. Bulova sviluppò il progetto in collaborazione con il Centre Electronique Horloger di Neuchâtel, creatore del movimento Beta 21. Il design fu affidato ad André Le Marquand, che optò per il bracciale integrato portato alla ribalta da modelli di gamma alta come il Royal Oak o il Nautilus. Il fallimento del prodotto, determinato dalla commercializzazione prematura, dal prezzo elevato e da problemi tecnici, portò la Casa sull’orlo del fallimento.

Introduced in 1980 as “the thermoelectrically powered wristwatch”, the Thermatron was based on the discovery by Thomas Seebeck. The Estonian-German physicist showed that a junction of two alloys kept in different temperatures produces an electric current.

The watch’s thermogenerator consists of two metal plates that hold four groups of 175 thermic couples each, which produce a combined voltage enabling to run the movement when a temperature difference of 1.5 degrees Celsius occurs. Such difference is achieved by means of the middle case made of black fiberglass, which insulates the stainless steel back (in contact with the wearer’s skin) from the bezel (room temperature). Bulova developed the project in collaboration with the Centre Electronique Horloger from Neuchâtel, the creators of the Beta 21 movement. The design was entrusted to André Le Marquand, who adopted the integrated bracelet popularized by such high-end models as the Royal Oak and Nautilus. The commercial failure of the product, due to premature marketing, high price and technical issues, dealt a nearly fatal blow to the company.
