Designed by Henri d’Origny in 1978, the round case with asymmetrical stirrup-shaped lugs now frames a smoked sapphire crystal dial. Its centre reveals the self-winding movement with the anthracite wheels and openwork oscillating weight. The cut-out numerals and Hermès signature appear to be levitating.

AP Royal Oak Jubilee
The "Jumbo" Royal Oak had been missing from the Audemars Piguet catalog for a few years when the brand relaunched it in a limited series meant to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the watch. Made in steel (with anthracite or salmon dial) and in gold (with anthracite or champagne dial), the 1,000 pieces hit the market in 1992. Their common features were the transparent case back and the 21Kt gold skeleton rotor, whose shape paid tribute to the octagonal bezel. At the time, the retail price in Italian currency amounted to 11,550,000 Lire for the steel version, that is nearly four times more than a Rolex Submariner (3,100,000 Lire). The prices were closer when it came to the gold versions - 27,500,000 Lire for the Royal Oak Jubilee and 20,100,000 Lire for the Submariner. The reason for that is the cost of manufacturing the complex Royal Oak bracelet, steel being far harder to work than gold.

ITALIANO

The Odysseus now comes in white gold with an
integrated rubber or leather strap. The timepiece with the large-format date
and day display and a water-resistant case features a grey dial with a special
surface structure for a textured effect.
The watch is powered by the L155.1 Datomatic
manufacture caliber, whose balance wheel beats at a frequency of 28,800
semi-oscillations per hour (4 hertz). Recessed poising screws minimise air
turbulence that could affect the rate. The movement has a maximum power reserve
of 50 hours. The skeletonised and partially black-rhodiumed central rotor with
a centrifugal mass in platinum assures dependable energy delivery.

Vintage ads - Seiko (1952)
What
makes this ad especially interesting is its release year. In 1952, when The Eastern Jeweller and
Watchmaker magazine
published it, Seiko timepieces were unknown in Europe. They only reached the
Old Continent in 1964, when marketing started through a number of Scandinavian
stationery shops (!). As shown by the text, the company’s clocks featured the
“Seikosha” trademark, whilst wrist watches were signed “Seiko”.Do you like vintage watch ads? The Pulsar is back
The first-ever
smart watch is back. Hamilton has issued a reedition of the Pulsar fifty years after
its launch.
With its LED (Light Emitting Diodes) display and red numerals, the world’s
first “solid state” timepiece (see above) revolutionized the way of telling the time.
My book The Museum Collection features four pages (198-201) about its history and specs. Click here to watch the full box & papers that came with the timepiece in the 1970s. The emergence of LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) technology, with its lower energy consumption, doomed the Pulsar to a quick decline – production was discontinued in 1977.

The emergence of LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) technology, with its lower energy consumption, doomed the Pulsar to a quick decline – production was discontinued in 1977.
The new
Pulsar is called PSR, as the original brand name is owned by Seiko. Developed
in conjunction with Asulab – a sister company of Hamilton in the Swatch Group –
the module features a hybrid display system combining reflective LCD technology
and emissive OLED (organic light-emitting diode) technology that works in the
dark. As very little energy is demanded, the manufacturer guarantees a
five-year autonomy – the original Pulsar required a battery change after six
months.
The models
of the 1,970-piece limited edition with yellow PVD-coated case and bracelet
cost CHF 995. The unlimited steel models cost CHF 745. They will both hit the
shelves next month.
ITALIANO
